Is your computer struggling to get going and then slow to do anything? Some years ago we changed to the Linux 'Ubuntu' operating system and have never looked back. This is free to download and use, and is very safe - being almost immune to viruses (unless you instal them!). It comes with the Firefox browser and LibreOffice (formerly 'OpenOffice') already installed. The available additional software is vast and mostly free - and can be installed safely from within Ubuntu with just one click. You'll find so much useful stuff: video and image editing, sound recording and editing, to highlight just a few.
If you'd like to give Ubuntu a try you can do so without installing it. Just download the image from their website and run it from a USB stick or CD.
